Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher, one of the three greatest figures of the ancient period of Western philosophy (the others were Plato and Aristotle), who lived in Athens in the 5th century BCE.A legendary figure even in his own time, he was admired by his followers for his integrity, his self-mastery, his profound philosophical insight, and his great argumentative skill. For this reason, it would be virtually impossible for all citizens to express their interests to their elected official. Nevertheless, the principles of democracy in theory remain inherently advantageous to citizens, and democratic governments remain answerable to the people.

The Principles of Democracy The word democracy comes from two Greek words: demos = people and power and allows all the diverse interests within a society to be expressed. In the United States today, pluralism connects neatly to the growth ofinterest in reason of the whole. You choose a member, indeed: but when you have. Democracy (Greek: δημοκρατία dēmokratía, literally "rule by people") is a system of government where the citizens exercise power by voting. In a direct democracy, the citizens as a whole form a governing body and vote directly on each issue.

Nov 19,  · My book “Save Democracy — Abolish Voting” was published by The Democratic Society on the 16th November Superficially, the most obvious, topical, reason to read “Save Democracy. The only just way to run a society, therefore, is to base decisions on the will of the majority. Yet the problem with this idea is that it can quite easily lead to despotism. Despotism can come at the hands of a single person or a multitude. In the case of a democracy, there is a grave danger that the majority will become despotic.

Reason and Democracy breaks new ground in providing a plausible philosophical basis for the communitarian view of a healthy democracy as the rational pursuit of common purposes by free and equal citizens. Thomas A. Spragens Jr. argues that the most persistent paradigms of Western political rationality originated in classical philosophy, took their modern expression in the philosophies of Kant.

Jun 20,  · The most crucial variable predicting the success of a democratic transition is the self-confidence of the incumbent elites.

If they feel able to compete under democratic conditions, they will accept democracy. If they do not, they will not. And the single thing that most accurately predicts elite self-confidence. In a democracy, tribal mentality is very dangerous, because it will make you vote “for your team” instead of voting according to issues.

That means that whoever leads “your team” can rest assured that they have your vote, and instead of focusing on your interests, they can proceed to deal with their own.

Although the word “democracy” is commonly used to denote all that is good in politics, democracy is a dubious proposal. It is the thesis that you may be required to live according to rules that you reject, simply because those rules are favored by others.

Having seen the failed attempts at a democratic government in his native France, Tocqueville set out to study a stable and prosperous democracy in order to gain insight into how it worked. The first, rather obvious, strike against Athenian democracy is that there was a tendency for people to be casually executed.

It is understandable why Plato would despise democracy, considering that his friend and mentor, Socrates, was condemned to death by the policy makers of Athens in BCE.
